Come sei entrata nel mondo della fotografia?
Mi sono appassionata alla fotografia perché lavoravo per un editore che ha realizzato le riviste Thrasher e Juxtapoz e il proprietario mi ha dato una macchina fotografica quando ha notato che stavo scattando un sacco di foto. L'ho adorato subito. Ho iniziato a scattare durante tutti i nostri eventi e poi ho seguito un corso di introduzione alla fotografia in bianco e nero. Ho imparato a sviluppare e stampare foto in bianco e nero. A volte mi chiedo se quello sia stato il mio lavoro migliore. Poi da lì è successo solo anni dopo, quando ho deciso che il percorso di carriera non era per me e volevo realizzare qualcosa di unicamente mio. Ho realizzato che o potevo continuare a provare a superare le sfide o crearne di nuove. Quindi è quello che ho fatto. E poi ho ricominciato da zero, era ormai troppo tardi per tornare indietro.
Quando hai capito che volevi farne una carriera?
Ho capito che volevo farne una carriera nel 2008 mentre ero in tour con Tegan e Sara. Ho solo pensato "wow, mi sto divertendo così tanto, se potessi in qualche modo farlo ogni giorno della mia vita ne sarei per sempre grata".
Lavori in un campo molto competitivo; come sei cresciuta e qual è stato il processo che ti ha portato a definire il tuo stile?
Non sono sicuro di come sono riuscita a farm strada. Ho solo fatto un passo alla volta. Faccio molte domande e cerco di essere d'aiuto. Onestamente non avevo idea di essermi fatta strada, ma un giorno mi sono resa conto di esser riuscita a pagare un sacco di debiti, mi piace ancora lavorare sodo e rimanere molto umile in questo. Ho capito che nessun lavoro sia troppo grande o troppo piccolo e mi sono aggrappata a questo. Cerco di assicurarmi di avere molte informazioni sui miei clienti e di accettare lavori in cui credo e di cui sono entusiasta.
Qual è la parte più gratificante per te dell'essere una fotografa?
Connettermi con le persone e creare arte significativa è ciò che amo davvero fare.
E qual è la parte più impegnativa e difficile?
Sentirsi bene lavorando e rimanendo ottimisti riguardo al mondo è stata la cosa più difficile. Direi però che la parte commerciale del mio lavoro è la più impegnativa. Semplicemente non mi piace pensarci, mi rende triste e frustrata, soprattutto.
Qual è il tuo soggetto preferito da fotografare?
Per me sono le persone. Mi piace fotografare le persone, gli anziani e tutti gli altri
Internet e i social media hanno cambiato il modo in cui comunichiamo e presentiamo il nostro lavoro; questi nuovi strumenti aiutano i giovani creativi? Secondo te, oggi è più facile iniziare la carriera di fotografo?
Non sono sicura di essere la persona migliore per esprimere questa opinione in questo momento. Non sto iniziando come fotografa, quindi penso che la mia opinione su questo non abbia alcun valore significativo.
Oggigiorno quasi tutti hanno accesso a dispositivi che scattano foto; cosa pensi sia la differenza tra un fotografo professionista e qualsiasi altro fotografo che considera questa forma d'arte un hobby?
Un fotografo professionista è una persona che fa fotografia di mestiere e questa è la sua principale fonte di reddito. Essere una fotografa professionista per me significa anche lavorare in modo professionale. Ciò significa trattare tutti i miei clienti con rispetto e cortesia. Rispettare le scadenze e assicurarmi che il lavoro che sto producendo sia coerente e all'altezza degli standard professionali.
Tra i tuoi lavori, qual è il tuo preferito e perché?
Tutto quello che faccio e ho fatto con Hayley Williams è il mio preferito! Lei è la mia ispirazione sempre e per sempre.
Come ti mantieni ispirata? Chi ha influenzato di più il tuo lavoro?
Sono costantemente ispirata dall'ambiente che mi circonda e dalle persone intorno a me. Mi sveglio ogni mattina con un bisogno innato di entrare in contatto con le persone.
Se dovessi scegliere una fotocamera con cui scattare per il resto della tua vita, quale sarebbe
Non è giusto, non posso assolutamente scegliere!
Qual è quel consiglio che avresti voluto ricevere all'inizio della tua carriera?
E qual è l'unica cosa che diresti a tutti coloro che vogliono entrare nella fotografia? Vorrei che qualcuno mi avesse detto di tornare a scuola e finire l'università.
Cosa significa per te la fotografia?
Significa che ho colto una possibilità e ho creduto che avrei potuto farla funzionare contro tutte le difficoltà e le sfide che ho dovuto affrontare-. Significa espressione e connessione e, si spera, significa che non sarò mai davvero sola.

How did you get into photography?
I got into photography because I was working for a publisher they made Thrasher and Juxtapoz Magazines and the owner gave me a camera when he noticed i was taking a bunch of photos. I loved it immediately. I started shooting all of our events and then took an Introduction to Black and White Film Photo class. I learned how to develop and print black and white photos. I wonder sometimes if that was my best work. Then from there it just happened years later, when i decided that the career path I had chosen was not a very equal one and I was hitting a glass ceiling not of my own making. I thought I maya s well do somthing else if i was always going to be pushed down and never be able to get as far as I wanted. I figured that I was pretty over it, I could either keep trying to overcome the challenges or create new challenges. So that’s what I did. And then I realized that I was starting at the very bottom again, but it was too late to turn back.
When did you realize that you wanted to make a career out of it?
I realized i wanted to make a career out of it in 2008 while I was touring with Tegan and Sara. I just thought “wow I am hvaing so much fun, if I could somehow do this every day of my life i would be forever grateful.”
You work in a very competitive field; how did you work your way up, and what was the process that led you to define your style?
I am not sure how I made my way up. I just took it one step at a time. I ask a lot of questions and I try to be helpful. I honestly had o idea I had worked my way up, but one day I realized that I had paid a lot of dues.I still like to work hard and stay very humble in that. I have taken the idea that no job is too big or too small and hung on to that. I try to make sure to have a lot of information about my clients and take jobs that I believe and am excited about.
What's the most rewarding part of being a photographer for you?
Connecting with people and making meaningful art is what I really love to do.
And what's the most challenging and difficult?
Feeling good about working and staying positive about the world has been the most challenging. I’d say the commerce part of my job is the most challenging though. I just don’t like to think about it, it’s makes me sad and frustrated, mostly.
What is your favorite subject to photograph?
For me it is people. Hands down I enjoy photographing people you and old and everyone in between.
The internet and social media changed the way we communicate and showcase our work; are these new tools helping young creatives? In your opinion, is it easier to start a career as a photographer nowadays?
Iam not sure that I am the best person to give this opinion. I am not just starting out as a photographer, so I think that my opinion on the challenges of starting as a photographer probably don't hold any value.
Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices that take pictures; what do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and any other photographer that considers this form of art a hobby?
A professional photographer is a person who does photography for a living by trade and that is their main source of income. Being a professional photographer to me also means working in a professional manner. That means treating all of my clients with respect and courtesy. Adhering to deadlines and making sure that the work that I am producing is consistant and up to professional standards.
Among your works, which one is your favorite and why?
Everything I do and have ever done with Hayley Williams is my favorite! She is my always and forever inspiration.
How do you keep yourself inspired? Who has influenced your work the most?
I am inspired by my environment and the people around me. I wake up every morning with an inherent need and drive to connect with people.
If you had to pick one camera to shoot with for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That’s not fair, I cannot do that!
What’s that one piece of advice that you wish you had gotten at the beginning of your career? And what’s the one thing you would say to all those who want to get into photography?
I wish someone had told me to go back to school and finish college.
What does photography mean to you?
It means that I took a chance and believed that I could make it work against odds and challenges that I faced and face still. It means expression and connection and it hopefully means i will never be alone.
